Maxwell Air Force Base is located in Montgomery, Alabama and is officially known as Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base. Maxwell-Gunter is under the Air Education and Training Command and is home to Air University headquarters, which continues the tradition of educating tomorrow’s planners and leaders, in air and space power. In 1910, the Wright Brothers established the first U.S. civilian flying school in Montgomery. In the 1930’s, Montgomery became the America’s center for airpower education when the Army Air Corps Tactical School moved to Maxwell AFB. The garrison unit at Maxwell-Gunter is the 42d Air Base Wing.
