Fort Wainwright, AK

Located in Fairbanks, Alaska and established in 1941, Fort Wainwright is a United States Army post, home to the 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, the USARAK Aviation Task Force, and the Medical Department Activity-Alaska. Fort Wainwright was first used as an Air Force Base to test aircraft in arctic conditions. Since 1978, Fort Wainwright has participated in the Installation Restoration Program through the Department of Defense to research and clean contamination in soil and water. They oversee landfills, drum burial sites, fuel terminals, and coal storage areas. In August 1990, Fort Wainwright was added to the Superfund list as a national priority.
